Under the direction of Ajit Pai, the Federal Communications Commission is on a mission to destroy Net Neutrality. One of the reasons brought up to defend the decision is that Internet Service Providers will not be abusing their authorities and there has been no evidence to suggest otherwise. It seems the FCC is intent on ignoring one formal complaint against Verizon, accusing the carrier of violating Net Neutrality rules.
The formal complaint against Verizon was filed by one Alex Nguyen who actually compiled a list of all the carrier’s offenses that clearly violated Net Neutrality rules. The complaint was actually filed a year ago and both parties have since argued their respective points, The Verge recently reported. As the deadline for the Net Neutrality ruling comes closer, the FCC is doing everything it can to disregard any obstacle that might get in its way.
Now, there are a few points of interest in this case that are worth noting. For one thing, Nguyen is not a lawyer, even though he does work for a law enforcement agency. Instead, he studied computer science and is a self-proclaimed gadget enthusiast.
It’s also worth pointing out that Nguyen was the only person to have ever filed a formal complaint against a particular ISP while informal complaints number in the tens of thousands. The discrepancy is important since the former is akin to an actual lawsuit while the other is about as effective as talking to a customer service representative.
On Verizon’s part, the carrier vehemently denied all of the allegations by Nguyen last year, Ars Technica reports. According to the ISP, many of the complaints that Nguyen filed against them were due to third-party companies and situations that were beyond their control. Whatever the case may be, the FCC is supposed to rule on the matter in due course.
