Ethereum test team is scheduled to release a new testnet named Hoodi on 17th March 2025 as a solution to the problems experienced when testing Pectra update on Sepolia and Holesky testnets. These early tests were prone to configuration bugs and synchronization errors, and more testing was essential. The Pectra upgrade is a significant addition to the Ethereum network, introducing features such as batching of transactions and support for paying gas fees in ERC-20 tokens.
The primary objective of the Hoodi testnet is to verify validator exits in particular and a smooth deployment of the Pectra upgrade to the Ethereum mainnet. The activation of the Pectra upgrade on Hoodi will occur on March 26. The developers plan to focus on testing validator exits in a bid to ensure that the upgrade does not interfere with the network consensus algorithms.
In the event that Hoodi testing is successful, then the Pectra upgrade could be deployed on the Ethereum mainnet as early as late April or early May, roughly 30 days post-activation on Hoodi. This thorough test period shows the dedication of Ethereum to providing network stability and quality before unleashing major upgrades
