EA was one of the video game publishers to pull out from the annual E3 trade show to host its own event every summer named EA Play Live. However, the company announced on Tuesday that it decided not to host the event even in a virtual format this year.
The world is already adjusting to the “new normal” after two years since the COVID-19 spread was declared a pandemic. But it did not make the anticipated lineup of video game trade shows in 2022 any more certain.
EA confirmed that there will be no EA Play Live conference to expect this summer in a statement to IGN. “We love EA Play Live as it's our way of connecting with our players and sharing what’s new with all of you,” the publisher said. “However, this year things aren't lining up to show you everything on one date.”
EA managed to deliver online-only EA Play Live events last year, where major announcements about “Battlefield 2042” and the “Dead Space” remake were made. Based on the company’s statement this week, though, even a virtual version of the trade show is not happening this year. “We have exciting things happening at our world-class studios and this year we’ll reveal much more about these projects when the time is right for each of them,” EA added.
The announcement of EA Play Live’s cancellation this year adds to the level of uncertainty of the widely anticipated video game events in the summer. In previous years, EA Play Live usually happened around the same time as E3. But even E3’s status remains unknown for 2022.
In January, as the cases of new infections due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant rose, the Entertainment Software Association announced E3 2022 will not have in-person events just like last year. But the announcement was also not clear if E3 would follow the same format as last year, leading to speculations that it could be canceled eventually.
However, video game fans might still have a few things to look forward to in summer. Leaker Tom Henderson recently cited an email from the Entertainment Software Rating Board sent to developers that reportedly mentioned E3 2022 is still happening as a digital event. Gamescom has also announced last week that it will be hosting both online presentations and in-person events in Cologne, Germany on Aug. 24-28.
