Motion controls have always been a tricky subject in the video game industry. So far, Nintendo has been the reigning king in this arena, what with its excellent Wii hardware. With the Switch, the company has taken things to another technological level and id Software, along with Panic Button took advantage of this to add motion control in the portable console version of Doom in the latest update.
Doom on the Switch is already considered a technical marvel because of how well the developers managed to adapt the demanding game in the unit, which isn’t really that powerful. By adding motion control to aiming in the FPS, however, it might have just changed the landscape for similar games, Ars Technica reports.
Nintendo had previously shown that motion control aiming using the Joy Cons on the Switch was more than possible with Splatoon. Following this formula, Doom’s motion control is about as close to the perfect fit as the arrangement has ever come.
Players basically do the running and moving using the sticks and triggers while using the built-in gyroscopes to do the actual aiming. It doesn’t try to do anything too drastic, which is what so many other developers and companies have done in the past. The people behind Doom simply wanted it to function well enough that it actually made sense and based on the reactions so far, it does.
Along with the motion control, Bethesda also noted in its update post that it made a few tweaks to multiplayer. It’s now easier for groups to get together and fight monsters en masse a new party system has also been added to the game.
The developers even made changes to the icon so that it’s now much closer to what’s seen on the box art for the Switch. It’s nothing major, but it’s a nice gesture, all the same.
