Disney unveiled its upcoming free-to-play video game called “Dreamlight” developed by Gameloft. While the title is not slated to launch until next year, avid Disney fans will have a chance to gain early access in the coming months.
The official “Dreamlight” trailer was revealed on Wednesday, along with details about the game’s release window. While there is no specific release date yet, Disney confirmed that the life sim will be available sometime in 2023.
As mentioned, “Dreamlight” will use a free-to-play model but Disney will let fans purchase a Founder’s Pack that will allow them to access the game starting this summer. The same early access perks will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. “During the early access phase, you’ll be one of the first players to explore Dreamlight Valley, and will get exclusive rewards that you’ll retain once the game officially launches next year,” Disney said in the announcement post.
The best way to describe the “Dreamlight” gameplay is that it will be a mix of life simulation and adventure gaming genres. Disney confirms it will feature “limitless” customization options that would allow players to design outfits based on popular costumes from Disney and Pixar films, but there will be an in-game clothing library to choose from as well.
“Dreamlight” will also allow players to customize their character’s homes similar to other life sim titles. “The game will also feature an ever-evolving list of Disney and Pixar-inspired furniture and clothing, from Mickey Mouse-adorned streetwear to Frozen-inspired antique kitchen designs,” Disney added.
While the announcement post did not mention it, the “Dreamlight” clothing library and home customizations could be where microtransactions will come into play. The adventure aspect of the game comes with the unlockable locations and quests that players will have to complete in line with the game’s main goal of revealing the mysteries of a phenomenon called The Forgetting.
The trailer is also chock-full of beloved Disney and Pixar characters (both heroes and villains) that will interact with a player’s character in the game. Some of the familiar faces seen in the “Dreamlight” trailer include Queen Elsa, Belle, Goofy, Moana, Remy, Simba and his friends, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Wall-E, and Ralph. The game will be available on various platforms, including PC (Mac and Windows), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
