Bungie is making preparations for the launch of the next “Destiny 2” expansion, and that means older content will be moved to the Destiny Content Vault. The developer has now confirmed that players only have a few months left to access the “Forsaken” expansion before the release of “The Witch Queen” next year.
Paid expansions like “Forsaken” are usually accessible to players forever, but that changed for “Destiny 2” when Bungie launched the Destiny Content Vault last year. Based on the developer’s explanation, the online multiplayer has gotten so big that they needed to remove certain content from rotation so they can effectively update and maintain the entire game in the years to come.
Bungie confirmed on Thursday that “Destiny 2: Forsaken” will be the next to be removed from the game and onto the Destiny Content Vault. This is to make space for the “The Witch Queen” expansion and the new Throne World destination launching on Feb. 22, 2022. On the same day, the “Forsaken” campaign and Tangled Shore destination will be moved to the content vault, while The Dreaming City destination remains in circulation.
“Destiny 2” content moving to the Destiny Content Vault will no longer be accessible to players, even those who purchased the expansion. However, Bungie may also bring back certain content in the future, but nothing is guaranteed at the moment.
As a small incentive, the developer is giving players a few months to revisit or start playing “Destiny 2: Forsaken.” The 2018 expansion currently costs $24.99. But players who have not purchased it yet may want to wait as Bungie is making the “Forsaken” campaign free from Dec. 7 to Feb. 22 next year.
Bungie added that “most of the Year 4 Seasonal content” will be moved to the “Destiny 2” vault as well. But the developer will retain certain features, including the Proving Grounds strike, the Warden of Nothing strike, and Battlegrounds activities.
“Destiny 2” Battlegrounds will be updated in February with the addition of the new “Vanguard Operations” that will be accessible for free. “All of Spider’s currency exchange function will be taken over by Master Rahool in the Tower when the Tangled Shore is moved into the DCV,” Bungie said in a blog post.
