Bungie’s upcoming MMO FPS sequel Destiny 2 is already making huge waves in the video game industry, but the studio’s not satisfied. To generate as much excitement for the game as possible, the company released a live-action trailer directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who also directed Kong: Skull Island. This is as big-budget as video games get.
Players of the first game will likely see some huge differences between the marketing strategies of these two titles. While Destiny 1 went the more somber, end-of-the-world approach, Destiny 2 is clearly not taking itself too seriously. In the new trailer, Vogt-Roberts combined hilarious dialogue with action-packed set pieces to bring about a light-hearted yet, pulse-pounding series of scenes.
With the Beastie Boys rocking in the background, Cayde-6, voiced by the legendary Nathan Fillion himself, gave a speech about how the Cabal destroyed everything good in the world; including puppies. This outrages the newly-awakened guardians, who then proceed to shoot everything in sight to avenge the fallen furry friends.
More to the point, the clip is an ode to serious fans of the games, injecting every sequence with movement and purpose that hardcore gamers will find familiar. This makes sense since Vogt-Roberts is apparently a huge fan of the Destiny as well, GameSpot reports.
"It really did have to do with my love of video games, and sci-fi, and Destiny," he told the publication. "It was just impossible for me to turn down. It had too many things that I love in it."
In order to create the right feel in the trailer, Vogt-Roberts was also treated to an early play of the upcoming game as well as talk to the development team. Apparently, the director was impressed with how much dedication the developers have for the game, especially noting how the mechanics give off a certain vibe that he enjoyed.
