DeepOcean, a leading Norway-based subsea service provider, has clinched a pivotal contract for the first phase of RWE AG's Nordseecluster offshore wind venture in the North Sea. Tasked with installing around 185km of cables to connect 44 turbines, this venture is anticipated to deliver 1.6 GW of renewable energy, illuminating over 1.6 million German households.
As per the agreement, DeepOcean will handle preparatory work, transportation, and installation of inter-array cables. Their responsibilities will include trenching, topside pull-ins, and terminations for the initial build-out phase. The ambitious installation plan encompasses approximately 185 kilometers (114.9 miles) of 66-kV aluminum and copper cables, connecting all 44 offshore wind turbines of Nordseecluster A.
Nordseecluster is a comprehensive offshore wind development consisting of four wind farm sites. Located in the eastern part of the German North Sea, the project is projected to generate a minimum of 1.6 GW of clean energy through at least 104 wind turbines. The phased construction will begin with Nordseecluster A, which comprises two sites with a combined capacity of 660 MW, before progressing to the second phase, Nordseecluster B, adding 900 MW.
DeepOcean's contract is contingent on a final investment decision by RWE, expected to be announced in the future. Should the decision be favorable, offshore installation work for Nordseecluster A will commence in 2026.
RWE, having acquired the minority share of its partner, Canadian power producer Northland Power Inc, earlier this year, now fully owns the Nordseecluster project. Equipped with Vestas turbines, all four facilities are expected to be operational by early 2029.
Once completed, the Nordseecluster project is projected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.6 million German households. Overall, this collaboration between DeepOcean and RWE is a significant step towards expanding renewable energy production and meeting clean energy goals in the region.
