Demon’s Souls was the predecessor to the Dark Souls franchise and was From Software’s first foray into the gothic universe full of brutal gameplay and giant boss fights. While it had its flaws, the title also had a lot of charm, which is why many gamers are still playing the game online to this day. Unfortunately for these dedicated fans, the server for Demon’s Souls is set to shut down permanently on February 28th, 2018.
As Engadget notes, one of the most intriguing aspects of Demon’s Souls was the ability of players to leave mysterious messages to other players. While the game was famously brutal in its difficulty, it also provided a unique sense of community. Then again, it also prompted those with a nasty sense of humor to lead others to their deaths by leaving messages near a drop or providing misleading tips.
Whatever the players may have used the system for, it’s undeniable that it made for a fun bit of mischief or a rewarding feeling of philanthropy. By the end of February 2018, however, this will no longer be the case.
In the blog post by Atlus, the firm noted that the game will still be playable with all of its offline features. The only things that shutting down the server will change is the online elements of the game. Even so, it’s a rather emotional turn of events for fans of the gritty franchise, now that they have to say farewell to such an iconic feature of the game.
“Thank you to everyone who played Demon’s Souls, and especially to those who still revisit its world from time to time. For those who haven’t played in a while, we invite you to once again visit Boletaria while the servers are still live and celebrate its contributions with us,” the blog post reads.
