After the airing of a new episode this week, “Criminal Minds” season 14 will once again have a short break before continuing with its last three episodes. Aside from the imminent finale, it is also still uncertain whether the show will be renewed for season 15.
“Criminal Minds” season 14 is the shortest run the series ever had since 2005 with only 15 episodes. Last August, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl implied (via Deadline) that the network was open to adding “a couple of more episodes.”
It was a possibility given that “Criminal Minds” season 14 did not miss the fall premiere lineup. But as 2018 approached its final weeks without any development on the matter, it became clear that 15 episodes are all the viewers will get.
No one from the network or the production has yet provided a definitive update about season 15. But the downgraded (in terms of episode count) “Criminal Minds” season 14 does not immediately mean it is the last hurrah for the brilliant FBI psychological profilers. “I’m not saying this is the last season. We will have an honest discussion with them at the right time,” Kahl also said last August.
Meanwhile, it also cannot be ignored that TV ratings are some of the deciding factors for a show’s renewal or cancellation. And according to the Nielsen ratings aggregator site TV Series Finale, the numbers are not helping the case of “Criminal Minds” season 14.”
“Criminal Minds” season 14 reportedly saw a 24 percent dip compared to season 13’s rating in the 18-49 demographics at this point. It has accumulated, so far, an average of 4.69 million viewers, which is down by 18 percent than last year. But note that as long as no official word has been given yet, there is still hope for viewers who love watching serial killers get caught.
For now, fans can focus on the upcoming cases left in "Criminal Minds” season 14. After a one-week hiatus, veteran profiler Dave Rossi (Joe Mantegna) might start thinking about going back to retirement — for good, this time. He will be caught in a “near-death” incident after a serial killer outwits his team. This happens on the 13th episode titled “Chameleon” airing on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
