Sony announced the list of free games coming to PlayStation Plus next month, and, surprisingly, it includes “Control: Ultimate Edition” on both PS4 and PS5. Many fans now feel like they were deceived since the game is relatively new, and they were made to pay the full price to get the next-gen upgrade.
‘Control: Ultimate Edition’ PS5 version arrives for free on PS Plus in February
“Control” was one of the well-received titles launched in 2020, so when developers confirmed it is getting an upgrade to new-gen consoles, fans naturally wanted it. However, the way to get its PS5 version was a roller coaster.
The game initially went live on PC, PS4, and Xbox One last August. Fans first thought they were all getting a free next-gen upgrade regardless of the edition they buy. However, publisher 505 Games clarified the following month that only those who purchased the Ultimate Edition are getting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
Some fans on ResetEra were already disappointed by this shift and even compared 505 Games’ move to what CD Projekt just did at the time. The latter announced that “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” upgrade, with improved loading times and ray tracing support, will be released for free on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S provided that they have previously purchased the game on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Now, players who went and purchased “Control: Ultimate Edition” for the full price of $39.99 to get the PS5 upgrade found another reason to be upset. Sony announced the game’s PS Plus debut next month, including the PS5 version that will be playable on the paid subscription platform until March 1.
To many players, that is enough time to reach 100% completion on most games. Some have started asking support pages if they can get a refund. Others also called the move “cynical,” pointing out that “Control: Ultimate Edition” was put on sale shortly before it was confirmed to be included on PS Plus.
‘Control: Ultimate Edition’ PS5 upgrade won’t allow game save transfer
The “Control: Ultimate Edition” version for next-gen consoles is confirmed to be released on Feb. 2. 505 Games announced that its resolution target is up to 1440p at 60fps frame rate in Performance Mode and will support vibration and triggers on the PS5 DualSense controller. However, players will have to start from scratch because there is no option to import game saves.
