Despite the scarcity of updates about the “Beyond Good & Evil 2” development, it remains one of the most awaited titles from Ubisoft. However, the publisher may have changed its plans for the upcoming action-adventure and it may no longer arrive on last-generation consoles.
Speculations on the possible cancellation of the “Beyond Good & Evil 2” PS4 and Xbox One versions started recently from a Resetera discussion. Resetera user glebanych, who has signed up to be a beta tester on several Ubisoft titles, reportedly received an invite for the upcoming “XDefiant." However, they found out that the invite was meant for a platform that they did not choose, so they decided to check on their beta registrations for other games, including “Beyond Good & Evil 2.”
The source said they registered as a beta tester for “Beyond Good & Evil 2” “years ago” and have chosen Xbox One as the platform. However, upon checking, the only available platforms listed for the game’s beta are PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5 only.
It did not take long before this discovery started a new round of rumors that “Beyond Good & Evil 2” might no longer launch on PS4 and Xbox One. However, this is hardly a surprising development.
The sequel was officially announced during E3 2017, but since then fans have yet to receive a substantial update about its development. Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio developing “Beyond Good & Evil 2,” has not provided a launch timeline, let alone a specific release date, to this day.
In Ubisoft’s latest financial reports, “Beyond Good & Evil 2” is not included in the games expected to launch in the next year. However, the title was still cited under Ubisoft’s “ambitious plans for biggest existing franchises” in the company’s Q1 2021-22 sales brief. On the bright side, that is a confirmation that the sequel is still in the works.
However, fans might still have to wait a long time before it actually launches. PC Gamer reported last month that Ubisoft would not commit when asked if “Beyond Good & Evil 2” would be part of its 2024 fiscal year, which would start on May 1, 2023.
“We are progressing well with Beyond Good and Evil 2, but it's too early to tell you more at this stage,” chief financial officer Frederick Duguet said at the time. If “Beyond Good & Evil 2” ends up getting released in that fiscal year, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S would already be on their way to being 3-year-old consoles, and bringing a new game to PS4 at Xbox One at that point would no longer make much sense.
