It’s a generally accepted fact in the PC gaming community that laptops don’t perform as well as desktops. However, Asus just announced a new gaming laptop that will give the more portable units a huge reputation boost. It’s called the ROG Chimera and it boasts a blisteringly fast 144Hz display. This makes maintaining 60fps performance a breeze.
Asus is known for regularly pushing the boundaries when it comes to its gaming laptops. In the past, it was the first to offer 120Hz displays, The Verge reports. Now, it’s the first to offer 144Hz, 1080p, 17.3-inch display on a gaming laptop. Equipped with Nvidia’s G-sync technology, the Chimera practically guarantees no sluggish frame rates.
During the announcement, there were several titles that were available to play, including Halo Wars 2. It’s likely that gamers might be most interested in how the laptop would perform when playing Overwatch or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but unfortunately, these titles were not included in the samples.
With what limited time publishers got to take the Chimera out for a spin, however, reviewers came away impressed. Of course, gamers should wait for the final reviews when the laptop actually comes out before they make a decision. Based on the initial impressions, though, Asus is off to a great start.
As to what sort of muscle the Chimera is packing under the hood, Asus has been quiet on that front. According to Laptop Mag, though, it seems the laptop comes with an unlocked Intel Core i7-7820HK and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080. If this is the case, keeping that 144Hz display buttery smooth should not be a problem.
The Chimera appears to be thicker than Asus laptops using Max-Q technology as well, PC World reports. This could indicate that this laptop is considerably beefier than something like the ROG Zephyrus, which already racked up high praise for its performance.
