With the world becoming increasingly warmer and the livestock industry being a huge producer of greenhouse gasses, some companies are working hard to create alternatives for meat lovers. One of these companies is SuperMeat and it just raised $3 million to develop artificial chicken meat. The goal is to create what the industry calls “clean meat,” which alludes to its environmental impact.
Among the venture capitalist firms that provided the seed funding for SuperMeat are New Crop Capital and Stray Dog Capital, TechCrunch reports. Even Europe’s biggest poultry producer, PHW got involved and also invested in the startup, which is a sign that some traditional livestock corporations are at least willing to make some changes.
Speaking to the publication recently, Ido Savir, the CEO and co-founder of SuperMeat notes how some in the food industry are open to the idea of transformation. From a financial standpoint, lab-grown meats make a lot of sense because of their scalability and their sustainability.
With regards to the planned lab-grown chicken meat project, the company explains that they will be grown from the cells of actual chickens, Futurism reports. The meat will be produced in green facilities, which would eliminate the need to rear live animals, which would be huge contributors to greenhouse gasses.
Of course, it’s also understandable that most traditional meat producers are still wary of fully supporting artificial alternatives. For now, lab-grown meats are still more expensive and companies have yet to perfect the formula to closely mimic the taste and smell of real meat.
The industry is getting closer every day, however, and if the artificial meat industry finally surpasses traditional livestock companies, it would have a huge positive impact on the environment. The prospect of growing chicken in a lab itself would reduce the impact of the meat industry on the world by up to 99 percent.
