Apple is making a really big business gamble with its future iPhones if the words of a well-known Apple analyst is to be believed. Apparently, the company is thinking of ditching its Touch ID feature entirely for it next lineup of devices in favor of relying solely on Face ID. This new feature is going to be available with the iPhone X and Apple might put it in all future iPhones jut to outsell the competition.
This pronouncement came via Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities and one of the most reliable sources of insider information involving Apple. Mac Rumors was one of the first to pick up on Kuo’s prediction, wherein Apple will only use the Face ID as an authentication tool for future iPhones. If so, the Cupertino firm is betting big on something that is still highly debated among users.
“We predict all new 2H18F iPhone models will likely abandon fingerprint recognition. We believe this change will allow all new models to realize a competitive advantage via differentiation, on the back of an integrated user experience of full-screen design and TrueDepth Camera/ Facial recognition/ Face ID/ AR applications,” Kuo reportedly wrote to investors.
Apparently, Kuo is convinced that Apple will try to capitalize on the Face ID’s 3D-sensing design, which will supposedly be a major selling point for iPhones released in 2018. It’s worth noting that this statement is at odds with the currently polarized environment caused by the feature.
On the one hand, the Touch ID has become a beloved feature that most iPhone fans can get behind, Forbes reports. Face ID, on the other hand, is still unproven and is considered with mistrust by many users. It’s certainly an exciting bit of technology, but in terms of user-friendliness and reliability, it’s still unproven. That’s why getting rid of Touch ID in favor of Face ID will be a huge gamble on Apple’s part.
