Apple has been in a technological rut recently, with many of its products noticeably declining and falling behind in terms of innovative features. None exemplify this fallen prestige better than the lackluster features of the most recent MacBook Pro and the relative non-appearance of a desktop Mac. However, in a recent internal letter to Apple employees, CEO Tim Cook is assuring his people that the company is still interested in making desktops.
When Apple launched the newest iterations of its flagship computer units, the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air, it was immediately clear that the company has yet to release a definitive upgrade on its desktop Mac lineup. This led many in the tech industry to assume that there won’t be any innovations with regards to the desktop products anymore, but an internal memo by Cook that TechCrunch obtained says otherwise.
“Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops,” the memo reads. “If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.”
This is a move that was intended to calm a roiling surface, where the loss of the desktop line is assumed would also result in the loss of jobs. More than that, it would also heighten the impression that Apple’s products are lagging when compared to its competitor, namely Microsoft.
The last significant upgrade to Apple’s desktop line happened way back in 2014, The Verge notes, and that was for the Mac Mini. The iMac did get a 5K retina option in 2015, but the length of time between upgrades has gotten fans worried.
With regards to Cook’s message, it isn’t clear if he is referring to all of the desktops that Apple has on offer or if there is an entirely new concept line in the works. In any case, all the employees, fans, and the media really has is the CEO’s assurance that something was happening.
