When it was caught secretly slowing down older models of iPhones and then getting showered with lawsuits after admitting that it was doing so, Apple is now offering an apology for its actions. The company previously tried to dismiss the issue with an explanation as to why it was sabotaging its older phone devices. Clearly, Apple realized its folly after witnessing the outrage from its consumers.
The company offered its apology with a message to its customers, acknowledging the concerns that many have with regards to the battery and performance of their devices. Apple said that it was not intentionally sabotaging older iPhones but it was nevertheless offering an olive branch in the form of cheaper battery replacement.
“First and foremost, we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades. Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that,” the message reads.
It's worth noting that Apple didn’t really provide an explanation as to why its batteries were prone to shutting down in the first place, which necessitated the throttling of older devices. The company wouldn’t respond to requests for comments on the matter either.
As CNET notes, it will take some time to see if the apology is enough to dampen the fires of outrage from consumers. Considering the almost unhealthy level of loyalty that Apple users have displayed in the past, it’s almost guaranteed that it will be.
There’s also the matter of the $50 discount on battery replacement for iPhones that no longer have a warranty. This would bring the price down from $79 to $29, which will roll out worldwide all throughout 2018. So customers will have a full year to avail of the discount.
