American Health Council Honors Andrew S. Lamb, M.D. as Best Doctor

NEW YORK, Aug. 14, 2017 -- As the current standing Vice President of Medical Affairs at Cone Health in Burlington, North Carolina, Dr. Andrew S. Lamb brings to the American Health Council 33 years of experience within the industry. With expertise in Internal Medicine and years of experience as a physician leader, Dr. Lamb has been selected as one of “America’s Best Doctors” for his continuous contributions to healthcare.

Dr. Lamb holds a B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1977. After graduation from West Point, he served for 3 years in Germany as a Signal Corps officer before receiving a Health Professions Scholarship to attend the University of Alabama School of Medicine, receiving his MD in 1984. Dr. Lamb completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia in 1987. He then served for 5 years at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. In 1990, he deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm where he served as Chief of Medicine for the 86th Evacuation Hospital in support of the 101st Air Assault Division. In 1992, he left active duty to enter private practice with Kernodle Clinic in Burlington, NC. He served as President of Kernodle Clinic from 1998-2001. He also has held numerous physician leadership positions to include Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff, Alamance Regional Medical Center. In 2014, he left private practice to become Vice President of Medical Affairs at Cone Health - Alamance Regional Medical Center and now the Cone Health System.

As VPMA, Dr. Lamb serves as the liaison between the medical staff and the senior executive leadership for Cone Health. Dr. Lamb’s true passion lies in teaching, investing, encouraging, and mentoring those coming behind him in medicine, while simultaneously improving the lives of patients and staff members alike. He attributes his success to the education and leadership skills that were instilled in him at West Point.

In addition to the above, Dr. Lamb has accomplished a myriad of achievements. He has led 40 medical missions worldwide for Global Health Outreach, the mission arm of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. He has taught medical students from both UNC and Duke as well as NP and PA students throughout his career. Currently, he is the Co-Medical Director of Elon University PA School and Co-Physician leader of the Physician Burnout Program at Cone Health. He also is a charter member of the North Carolina Consortium for Physician Resiliency and Retention. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Medical Society, the North Carolina Physician Health Program, and the North Carolina Physician Health Program Compliance Committee.

Professional awards and honors presented include 2 Meritorious Service Medals for distinguished service in the US Army, a Bronze Star for exceptional meritorious service during Operation Desert Storm, the West Point Society Leadership Award for the Piedmont of North Carolina, and a Distinguished Service Award from Kernodle Clinic. Dr. Lamb is also an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He is professionally associated with the Christian Medical and Dental Association and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the NC Medical Society, and Alamance/Orange County Medical Society.

Within the next 5 years, Dr. Lamb hopes to continue in his current position to help create an environment that empowers all physicians to do what they do best, better. He also wants to bring joy back into Medicine. He has a passion to establish a comprehensive, sustainable, and effective Physician Burnout Program at Cone Health.

Personal achievements cited by Dr. Lamb include his 40-year marriage to his wife, Cathy, and their 3 sons: Chris Parris-Lamb, Vaughan, and David. Dr. Lamb loves sports and has also coached Youth baseball and basketball for many years.

In his spare time, Dr. Lamb enjoys fly fishing, fly tying and fly rod-building, backpacking, exercising, and reading.
