AVENTURA, Fla., Sept. 11, 2017 -- With school starting up this month, the team at All Care Health & Wellness Center is reminding parents about the importance of backpack safety for their children and the effects of carrying too much weight and the impact it can have on their kid’s overall health.
Pull up in the pickup lane of any local school and you’ll see it: Children with backpacks nearly as heavy as they are, slung over one shoulder as they trudge from classrooms to awaiting cars and busses.
Now that it is back-to-school time, Dr. Brad A. Kern, D.C. and the team at All Care Health & Wellness Center in Aventura is reminding parents to teach their children about appropriate backpack safety and how overloading their bags can create health issues down the road.
“You would honestly be surprised at the number of kids we are starting to see that are complaining of back and neck problems,” says Dr. Brad Kern, D.C. “And most of what it all boils down to is carrying backpacks that are just way too heavy for their physical stature.”
Common injuries associated with backpack injuries include back and neck pain, poor posture, and growth issues. Chiropractic care often helps alleviate the pain associated with backpack injuries, can improve posture, and can strengthen and condition muscles to help accommodate the weight of carrying even a normally loaded bag.
A few tips from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) include making sure your child does not carry more than ten percent of their body weight inside their backpack and urging them to wear both shoulder straps. Bag selection also plays a crucial role and choosing one with wide, padded straps is advised. And, of course, backpacks should not be crammed to the brim with heavy textbooks and supplies.
“The problem is so widespread nationally that the American Chiropractic Association has actually designated September 20th as School Backpack Awareness Day,” continues Dr. Kern. “But we want to take that one step further by educating parents and students as classes are getting back into session.”
