Watching movies of new and old titles is no longer limited to movie theaters nowadays, thanks to streaming services. Companies like Netflix have also become huge production studios as well, with the ability to put out original movies and TV shows. It then begs the question if “Alita: Battle Angel 2” could turn out to be an upcoming film released through a streaming platform.
Could 'Alita: Battle Angel 2' premiere on Disney+?
Wondering whether “Alita: Battle Angel 2” would be released online, instead of movie theaters, is not far-fetched. Earlier this year, Disney officially launched its own streaming platform Disney+ in the United States and Canada.
Note, though, that the rising popularity of streaming platforms does not necessarily mean traditional movie premieres have become less appealing. But when asked about the possibility of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” getting released on Disney+, producer Jon Landau is not closing any doors.
“I think Jim [Cameron] and I love the opportunities that streaming and these other avenues of distribution are offering people today,” Landau said in an interview with CinemaBlend. Though he pointed out that this statement does not exclusively apply to “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
The producer added they are considering venturing onto other filmmaking opportunities aside from the usual movie theater premieres, whether it is for "Alita: Battle Angel 2" or other titles. Landau co-produced the first movie with Cameron, but he confirmed it is not just up to them to make the second movie happen.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ release date, production
The first movie was released worldwide last February under 20th Fox Century. About a month later, the company and Disney finalized its merger, making the decision on greenlighting the sequel fall on the hands of the latter.
It is still too early to talk about the release date of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” since Disney has yet to decide on the movie’s future. But Landau and actress Rosa Salazar have both encouraged fans to continue showing Disney that they are willing to pay to see a sequel.
On that note, fans are doing their part. More than 130,000 people have signed the online petition demanding “Alita: Battle Angel 2” to be made. Salazar has also encouraged the fans to support the movie’s Blu-ray/DVD copy, which is another way to show Disney that the movie can be a profitable investment.
