Apple’s product launch events in the second half of 2021 brought several devices that fans have heard so much about from months, even years, worth of leaks. Unfortunately for music lovers, the AirPods Pro 2 did not make the cut. But more reports that emerged recently are giving them hope that it could change in the coming months.

At this point, it seems that the consensus among Apple insiders and analysts is that the AirPods Pro 2 will be released sometime in 2022. But the exact launch window remains a mystery. Apple is expected to host its spring launch event, possibly in March or April, where the tech giant could announce new iPads and Mac products.

However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On (via MacRumors) that Apple has a “big update” in the works for the AirPods Pro line in the latter part of the year. This appears to correspond with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest prediction on the AirPods Pro 2, indicating that the true wireless earbuds could be released in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Going by these reports from two well-established Apple news sources, it seems the AirPods Pro 2’s likely release timeline is sometime in September or October. The company usually holds two events in the fall -- one in September for the new iPhones and another in October or November for new MacBooks.

Meanwhile, the “big update” Gurman was referring to could be the list of upgrades and new features that could be implemented on the AirPods Pro 2. In earlier reports with fellow Bloomberg journalist Debby Wu, the device is expected to look different from its predecessor as it is expected to lose the stems on both earphones.

Apple might also be looking to market the AirPods Pro 2 as a perfect device to pair with customers’ Apple Fitness subscriptions. The wireless earphones are rumored to possibly have new motion sensors that would also work great with an Apple Watch to track users’ movements.

However, most AirPods fans might be looking forward to something else, such as the ability to stream Apple Music in lossless quality. And according to a report from Kuo earlier this month, Apple could be planning to make the AirPods Pro 2 the first in the AirPods family to support Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC).
