Smartphones that can be folded were once just mere concept until Samsung and Huawei introduced the Galaxy Fold and Mate X, respectively, this year. Now, smartphone fans are quite certain that Apple will come up with its own foldable iPhone in the near future.
Apple has yet to announce any official plans about a foldable iPhone, so fans will have to be contented with concept videos for now. Antonio De Rosa of the ADR Studio recently imagined and showed the world how a foldable iPhone could look like and it already stirred excitement among iPhone fans.
De Rose calls the concept foldable device the iPhone X Fold as it bears a huge resemblance with the 2017-released device. The extra screen size leaves enough space for more standby widgets in the home screen along with the staple app icons.
Interestingly, the concept video and renders show the iPhone X Fold having an in-display fingerprint scanner. However, the presence of various front-facing sensors suggests it also has the Face ID. The packaging suggestion is also interesting with the use of a triangular box.
Will Apple actually make a folding iPhone? There are early clues that they would eventually. Last month, Apple patent applications were published for “electronic devices with flexible displays” and for “flexible display devices” that were originally filed in December 2017 and October 2018, respectively.
Despite Apple’s silence about making a foldable iPhone, the mentioned patent applications prove that the company has early efforts to develop such technology. The company will most likely release their response to the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X that MacWorld speculates could be in 2020 or 2021.
Apple is not always the first to introduce major smartphone designs and features to the public. For example, it took them years before finally introducing the dual SIM feature. The company also waited for some time before coming up with an almost bezel-less device. However, Apple certainly remains one of the trendsetters in the consumer tech scene and once it releases a foldable iPhone, it will most likely have an effect on market demand for foldable devices.
