In a major relief to bitcoin enthusiasts, Microsoft has said that it will continue to support bitcoin, adding that inaccurate information was inadvertently posted online.
The online post that read, “Microsoft Store doesn’t accept Bitcoin”, stirred media frenzy, with many speculating that small amount of bitcoin transactions drove the tech giant to withdraw its support for the digital currency.
The original post has now been deleted from the website. It stated that users would not be able to redeem Bitcoin into their Microsoft account and that while existing balances will still be available for purchases from Microsoft Store, it can't be refunded. The post said that this applied specifically to Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile.
However, Microsoft told TechCrunch:
“We continue to support Bitcoin for adding money to your Microsoft account which can be used for purchasing content in the Windows and Xbox stores. We apologize for inaccurate information that was inadvertently posted to a Microsoft site, which is currently being corrected.”
In late 2014, the company started accepting bitcoin payments on its Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox stores. Microsoft partnered with bitcoin payment processor BitPay to offer this additional payment option to its customers.
