“The Man from U.N.C.L.E. 2” is said to be in the works despite the fact that the original movie did not really do well at the box office. Although it failed to earn more to get back its production cost, the movie gained devoted followers around the world, so there was a call for the sequel to be produced.
“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” is based on the popular 1960’s TV show of the same title. It is a comedy created by Sam Rolfe and starred Ian McCallum (Illya Kuyakin) and Robert Vaughn (Napoleon Solo). It aired from 1964 to 1968 and featured the story of two men who worked for the United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.) to stop the evil agendas of the villains.
When it was adapted for a movie in 2015, Guy Ritchie took the helm as its director. He then recruited Henry Cavill to portray Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer for the role as Illya Kuryakin. It has a good story and cast but since 2015 was the year when the “Star Wars” film and “Jurassic World” have broken box office records, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” did not get the chance to fully showcase what it can offer thus its return was quite low compared to the big movies that were released that year.
No update if a sequel is possible, but in 2017, Armie Hammer revealed that “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2” is being written, thus it is already in the works. He narrated that he was constantly being asked if a sequel is happening so to be able to give answers he called film producer and co-writer Lionel Wigram to get the info.
“I called Lionel Wigram, the producer of the movie, and he and Guy produced and wrote it all together,” Hammer told Slashfilm. “I was like, ‘Dude, what’s the deal? I get asked about this shit all the time. Can you just write a sequel?’”
Then he said that he asked Wigram if he can just write a sequel and the producer answered in the affirmative by saying, “Sure, I’ll write a sequel.” Now, with that reveal, fans are hoping that the story is finished and filming for “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2” could begin already. The interview was two years ago, and that was a lot of time to complete the story and script.
While some of the production team is already working behind the scenes, they still have to get the go signal from Warner Bros. If “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2” will be renewed, the release date is likely at the end of 2020 or 2021.
