White Diamond’s character remained a mystery to fans until “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 was exclusively released last July 21 at the San Diego Comic-Con. And some believe that White Diamond’s debut is a hint that the animated series is approaching its finale.
“Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 is White Diamond’s official debut in the series, her character having been mentioned a couple of times in earlier seasons. But the fans only saw the Gem Homeworld ruler in its entirety in the series’ latest episode and, so far, many expectations were confirmed.
Regarded as a staunch ruler of the Gem Homeworld and an overall matriarch, White Diamond is definitely an intimidating force. When Steven faced her in “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25, the titular protagonist was not able to finish a single sentence in their first meeting. And the next thing he knew, White Diamond already sent him away and locked him up in a prison within Homeworld.
White Diamond’s identity has been regarded as one of the biggest mysteries of the series. Introducing her in “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 could mean that there might be few secrets and truths left to be explored in the series, CBR suggests. And fans could be seeing the end of the “Steven Universe” series once every question has been answered.
Before White Diamond's debut in “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25, there were already several speculations that season 5 is the series' final installment. But another way to look at it is that the introduction of White Diamond can also lead to fresh stories, allowing the series to go on for more installments.
For one, it was shown in “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 that Yellow and Blue Diamond were able to heal the corrupted Centipeetle. However, the effects were only temporary and that was when they concluded that they need White Diamond for a permanent fix so they traveled to Homeworld.
Steven and White Diamond’s first meeting in “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 did not go as friendly as expected. And it is also likely that showrunner Rebecca Sugar has more plot twists up her sleeves with White Diamond as the new major villain in the series.
After “Steven Universe” season 5, episode 25 was shown at SDCC 2018, Cartoon Network released it on their official website on July 22. However, its official air date on TV remains under wraps.
