Shares of Sino Biopharmaceutical (HK:1177) climbed on Wednesday after the Chinese pharmaceutical company announced a major licensing agreement with AstraZeneca (ST:AZN) and expanded its strategic commercial partnership with GSK plc (LON:GSK), strengthening its position in the global respiratory medicine market.
Under the agreement, Sino Biopharm's subsidiary, Chia Tai Tianqing Pharmaceutical Group, granted AstraZeneca exclusive rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialize its experimental inhaled PDE3/4 inhibitor, TQC3721, in markets outside China. The investigational respiratory treatment represents another milestone in Sino Biopharm's strategy to monetize its research pipeline through international collaborations.
As part of the deal, AstraZeneca will pay Sino Biopharm an upfront payment of $200 million. The Chinese drugmaker is also eligible to receive up to $1.9 billion in potential development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments. In addition, the company will earn tiered double-digit royalties based on annual net sales if the treatment reaches the market.
Separately, Sino Biopharm announced an expanded partnership with GSK, securing commercialization rights in mainland China for the respiratory therapies Trelegy Ellipta and Anoro Ellipta. The company will oversee product importation, distribution, hospital access, and promotional activities across China, while recognizing revenue generated from domestic sales.
The announcements boosted investor sentiment, sending Sino Biopharm shares up as much as 7% to HK$5.15 during Wednesday's trading session before the stock trimmed part of its gains.
The latest agreements build on Sino Biopharm's growing network of partnerships with leading global pharmaceutical companies. Earlier this year, the company licensed selected rights for TQC3721 to Sanofi, while in May it entered a strategic collaboration with GSK to support the launch of hepatitis B treatment bepirovirsen in China.
Over the past several years, Sino Biopharm has accelerated its cross-border licensing strategy and commercial alliances, aiming to expand its international footprint, unlock the value of its innovative drug pipeline, and strengthen long-term revenue growth through partnerships with multinational pharmaceutical companies.
