The future of “Sherlock” season 5 may seem vague right now, but there are several reasons to hope that the series would continue. Fans must also face the truth that if a new installment is somehow in the pipeline, it cannot happen anytime soon for one clear reason.

‘Sherlock’ season 5 possible renewal

Before fans can start talking about release date speculations, they should worry about getting the show renewed by BBC first. Unfortunately, the network has not made any official announcements yet with regards to “Sherlock” season 5. So whether the series will continue or will be canceled, the word must come from no less than the BBC and showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.

It is important to note, however, that both Gatiss and Moffat have repeatedly mentioned in interviews that they are willing to go back to Baker Street if given a chance. In Moffat’s word, “Nobody has ever closed the door on ‘Sherlock.’” He clarified that no certain plan is in place, but he is confident there is a chance for them to work on “Sherlock” season 5 with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The actors play Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively.

Moffatt also revealed in 2014 that he and Gatiss started “plotting” up to “Sherlock” season 5. However, in 2017, Moffat told RadioTimes that he is comfortable ending the series with the season 4 finale in case the fifth season will not happen.

‘Sherlock’ season 5: Why it can’t happen soon

The series co-creators are obviously on board with giving Sherlock and Watson their next chapter. The fact remains that nothing concrete about “Sherlock” season 5 is planned at this point. Additionally, Moffat, Gatiss, Cumberbatch, and Freeman are all known for having busy schedules that were a recurring difficulty in the previous years.

Moffat and Gatiss are currently focused on filming an upcoming miniseries based on “Dracula” while Cumberbatch and Freeman both have a series of films slated to premiere this year and beyond 2019. In a social media post in 2017 (via Digital Spy), Moffat also implied that “Sherlock” season 5 would only happen depending on the availability of the two actors meaning recasting is not an option and fans must have an insurmountable amount of patience.
