The last episode of “Sherlock” season 4 had several factors for it to be considered an ultimate finale. For one its title was “The Final Problem” and its plot somewhat had a “The End” feel to it. That brings up the question: Will fans ever see “Sherlock” season 5?

‘Sherlock’ season 5: Is it ever going to be released?

Fans of the series are used to experiencing long hiatus whenever a season reaches its finale. However, the wait for “Sherlock” season 5 is going to be exceptionally long for several reasons. First, it is safe to say that no work has ever been done about it yet in terms of production since showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have been working on another BBC show based on “Dracula” shortly after season 4 aired.

Another very telling clue that “Sherlock” season 5 is not in the pipeline at this point is BBC’s silence about the show’s future. Fans may have been divided about how the plot went, but the show still secured millions of viewership in the United Kingdom and the United States. Usually, a TV network would want to make the best out of it by promising fans that more seasons are arriving in the future. But “Sherlock” is unlike other shows, and it is not surprising if the BBC is not doing the obvious.

Both Gatiss and Moffat have been saying over the years that one of the biggest considerations every time they are to produce a new season is the schedules of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. They are busy actors and making their schedules meet to film three film-like episodes.

‘Sherlock’ season 5 release date: What the show creators are saying

To fans worrying about the future of the show, it might help to review Gatiss and Moffat’s statements whenever asked about “Sherlock” season 5. In an online post from 2017 (via DigitalSpy), Moffat explained that season 4 felt like an end because it is a conclusion, but only of their story’s “Chapter One.”

The showrunners are apparently open to making “Sherlock” season 5 happen. But, as detailed above, the decision is not only for them to make. Perhaps when the upcoming “Dracula” series is out, fans will have more concrete answers.
