“Sherlock” season 5 is still not certain, based on statements coming from the show’s stars and producers. However, it can still happen as they have released new statements saying that since they are able to resolve the issues one by one, the BBC series could be filming in the future.
Moreover, although they keep saying that they still do not see “Sherlock” season 5 happening in the near future, no one in the production team has said that it will not be in production anymore. This means that they are not closing the door yet and they are just waiting for the right time for the series to continue.
In fact, Express reported that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) is "very keen" to come back for “Sherlock” season 5. It added that it may be only a matter of time before BBC officially announces the show’s return.
Cause of the Delay
It has been more than a year since “Sherlock” season 4 ended and fans are wondering why there is still no followup. Through various interviews of the showrunners and main cast members of the show, it was revealed that the leading reasons for the delay are conflicting schedules.
“I haven't really thought about it. Mark (Gatiss, co-showrunner) has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series," Metro quoted co-showrunner Steven Moffat as saying.
It should be noted that lead star Benedict Cumberbatch is also doing other projects, like Marvel films, and Mark Gatiss has an upcoming show titled “The Madness of George III.” Apparently, with the cast having other projects, filming cannot start yet for “Sherlock” season 5.
Another thing is that Martin Freeman was reported to be not that interested in working for the series anymore. In an interview, he seems to suggest that he does not want to be in “Sherlock” season 5.
"It's not a thing to be enjoyed, it's a thing of, 'You better do this, that's not fun anymore,” Telegraph quoted him as saying.
“Sherlock” season 5 has no release date yet as production has not started yet. More details should come soon as the producers try to figure out a way for the show to continue.
