It has been two years without any update whether there will ever be “Sherlock” season 5. But despite BBC’s silence on the show’s continuation, comments from the series creators and cast members give fans some hope.
The lack of any official statement from the TV network is both good news and bad news to fans. It is good news because that means the series is not canceled. But on the negative side of things, it also means fans will have to wait for an indefinite amount of time to see “Sherlock” season 5.
There are various possible reasons why the making of “Sherlock” takes an average of two years despite having only three episodes per season. But an obvious factor to the long gaps are the hectic schedules of showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. And it would seem to be the case for “Sherlock” season 5 as well.
Cumberbatch, who plays the titular role, has had a lineup of TV series and movies since 2017. But the actor has also been positive about going back on Baker Street for “Sherlock” season 5.
When asked about getting back on set for “Sherlock” season 5, Cumberbatch told Heart, “I would never say never, I don't know about another series but there is always room for negotiating something.” But the actor also noted that most of the people attached to the series have been on “breaks and working on other projects.”
Gatiss and Moffat are likely being asked about “Sherlock” season 5 in every red carpet events and premieres they attend. And they both patiently respond with the same, positive answer about the show.
The showrunners have repeatedly admitted there are no hard plans for “Sherlock” season 5 yet. One of the main reasons is they are currently working on the TV series adaptation of “Dracula” that will also take a long time to produce. “We’re making ‘Dracula,’ which is gonna take at least two and a half years. So there’s no immediate prospect but we certainly never say never,” Gatiss told HeyUGuys last year.
