Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte posted bail on Saturday after a trial court ordered her arrest on three counts of grave threats involving President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
The arrest order adds to Duterte’s mounting legal challenges as she also faces an impeachment trial in the Philippine Senate. A conviction could remove her from office and potentially disrupt her expected bid for the presidency in 2028.
The case further intensifies the political feud between two of the Philippines’ most influential families. Marcos and Duterte, both children of former presidents, joined forces during the 2022 elections and won by wide margins before their alliance collapsed in 2024.
Appearing outside the court dressed in black and surrounded by police officers, Duterte said she feared for her safety and accused authorities of harassment.
“If I post bail, the harassment won’t stop. If I don’t post bail, I’ll be taken to the police,” Duterte said, adding that she had no trust in the police or courts. She also questioned who would be held responsible if she died.
Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla rejected concerns about her treatment, saying police had accorded the vice president the respect appropriate to her position. Marcos’ office did not immediately comment on Duterte’s safety allegations but previously said it would respect the court’s decisions.
The court found probable cause to proceed with all three grave threats charges and set bail at 120,000 pesos ($1,900) for each count.
The charges stem from a November 2024 online press conference in which Duterte said she had instructed an assassin to kill Marcos, his wife and Romualdez if she herself were killed. Duterte has denied that her remarks constituted threats.
The same statements form part of the impeachment case against Duterte. She also faces allegations of misusing public funds during her tenure as vice president and education secretary, accusations she has denied.
