"Narcos" season 4 was confirmed last year. Netflix is bringing back the crime drama about true events relating to drug cartels after nearly a year of break.
New Location
From season 1 to 3, the show was set in Colombia and the first two of which narrated the story of Pablo Escobar, the well-known cocaine kingpin and Medellin cartel leader. This cartel was a feared drug syndicate and highly organized supplier of illegal narcotics around the world, and actor Wagner Moura played Escobar.
“Narcos” season 4 has moved to another location and it will now feature Mexico. As to why they changed the location, showrunner Eric Newman explained that they always knew that they would eventually feature Mexico since it is the known center of drug trade and where it all began. He added that the move was necessary for the story because they will tackle another cartel’s beginnings this time.
"The origins of the Guadalajara cartel are in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so Narcos is going back in time," Newman told The Hollywood Reporter
The announcement of the new location last year came after the tragic death of Carlos Muñoz Portal, the show’s location scout. In September 2017, the 37-year-old was found dead in a rural area near the border of the Hidalgo state and his body bore multiple gunshots, Telegraph reported.
The death of the said “Narcos” season 4 production staff was a great shock to everyone and they questioned themselves whether it was still safe to film in Mexico. Newman said that they thought it over and they decided to continue when the Mexican authorities assured them that they would be safe while filming.
“The Mexican authorities assured us that we were a priority and that they very much wanted us to continue working there,” the showrunner relayed to THR. “They saw this as an isolated occurrence, and I think everybody involved was able to look at each other and say that we should proceed.”
New Cast
Along with the new location, the show’s executives disclosed that the “Narcos” season 4 cast is new. It will introduce new lead stars and they are Michael Peña and Diego Luna.
Peña takes the role of Kiki Camarena, an undercover DEA agent, while Luna plays Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, the ringleader of the biggest drug cartel in the history of Mexico called the Guadalajara cartel.
Other confirmed cast members include Aaron Staton (Butch Sears), Alfonso Dosal (Benjamin Arellano Felix), Alyssa Diaz (Mika Camarena), Clark Freeman (Ed Heath), Ernesto Alterio (Salvador Osuna Nava), Fernanda Urrejola (Maria Elvira), Gerardo Taracena (Pablo Acosta), Gorka Lasaosa (Hector Palma), Guillermo Villegas (Sammy Alvarez), Lenny Jacobson (Roger Knapp), Teresa Ruiz (Isabella Bautista Horacio), Matt Letscher (James Kuykendall) and many more.
