The Strait of Hormuz carried an average of 21.2 million barrels per day in 2025, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy blamed mine strikes for two tanker fires, Anadolu Agency reported.

The IRGC Navy said one tanker was east of the strait and the other was inside it. It said the ships had disabled navigation equipment while attempting to use a route Tehran considers unauthorized.

Quarterly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) show flows of 20.9 million barrels per day in the first quarter of 2025, 21.0 million in the second, 21.3 million in the third and 21.6 million in the fourth. Those figures yield an annual average of about 21.2 million barrels per day, close to a fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption.

The EIA says Asian import markets are especially exposed to disruption in the strait. It warns that delays at oil chokepoints can raise shipping costs and global energy prices.

EconoTimes previously covered a separate report of two tankers and a tug catching fire in Hormuz.
