Fans are still waiting for Disney’s next official updates on “High School Musical 4.” But it will reportedly premiere exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform making late 2019 the earliest possible release date window.
The original trilogy exclusively aired on the pay TV network Disney Channel. But there are reports claiming that “High School Musical 4” is likely one of the contents to exclusively debut on Disney’s very own streaming platform.
This could be hinting at the possibility that "High School Musical 4" is impossible to premiere anytime soon. The Netflix-like service, to be officially called Disney+, is planned to go live before the year ends. However, note that Disney has yet to update fans about the progress in the production of "High School Musical 4," especially when it will be released.
Reviving the TV movie franchise, though came as a surprise to many fans, is not hard to comprehend since it is one of the most popular titles Disney has ever launched. When “High School Musical 4” was announced, Disney Channel President Gary Marsh even referred to the movie series as “part of Disney Channel's DNA.”
However, Marsh’s previous statement could also be hinting that “High School Musical 4” might not be exclusive to Disney+ and will continue the tradition of getting a Disney Channel premiere. But since the popularity of the movie franchise can also boost Disney+ subscriptions, there is a great chance that it could be initially exclusive to the streaming platform with a later release date on Disney Channel.
What is certain to launch on Disney+ is the “High School Musical: The Musical” TV series — not to be confused with the “High School Musical 4” TV movie. The former seemed to have gained more development in terms of production in 2018 as the studio reportedly started casting for its all-new lineup of characters.
“High School Musical 4” will retain the same TV movie format. It will introduce a new breed of East High Wildcats including the cousin of the Evans twins named Campbell. On the other hand, “High School Musical: The Musical” will be a 10-episode documentary-style series that revolves around the drama among East High students preparing for a theatrical remake of the original “High School Musical.”
