Grass Roots, a livestock farming cooperative in Arkansas, has announced that in collaboration the UK-based blockchain-backed platform Provenance, it has started working on a project to track packages of chicken along its supply chain using blockchain technology.
In an online post, Grass Roots said that blockchain technology will “give supply chains the opportunity to be totally conspicuous”. It hopes that by informing consumers how their food was raised, which is also verified in a peer-to-peer network, it can restore their trust.
“With blockchain...We can prove exactly who raised the animal and how it was raised, how many animals were raised in its batch and how they lived, and who the butcher was and how it was harvested. And all of this farm-to-fork information is authenticated by a technology that’s virtually unhackable,” it added.
According to the blog post, Grass Roots is currently testing Provenance’s technology with few of its wholesale customers. The chicken packages distributed by San Francisco-based Golden Gate Meat Company are labeled with QR codes, which could then be scanned and traced on the blockchain.
“If this tool proves to add value to our community of conscientious eaters, we’ll integrate it on all our product packages, including those we sell through our ecommerce platform,” Grass Roots added.
