When it comes to revolutionizing how First Person Shooter games worked, two games come to mind in terms of having the most impact: “Doom” and “GoldenEye 007.” A remake of the latter is now out for the PC for free, and not only will it tickle the nostalgia bones of fans of the original N64 version, it’s also multiplayer.
Sporting upgraded graphics, fans of one of the most innovative James Bond video games will not have to bring out their old console to play the title anymore, Digital Trends reports. Instead, they can just download the fan remake titled “GoldenEye: Source” for the PC.
The game was made by fans of the game and took almost 10 years to make. The results of this labor of love include 25 maps that have been redeveloped to have enhanced visuals and 10 game modes for multiplayer. 28 weapons have also been redesigned to have upgraded looks. The whole remake uses the Source engine by Valve.
Unfortunately, it seems a single-player mode won’t be coming, at least not from the same developers. According to the development site’s FAQ section, the reason for this is because they simply don’t have enough people to work on something as big as recreating the whole game, including all of the missions.
The remake is actually a result of the team trying to fix some issues that plagued the original version of the game, The Washington Times notes. The team spent an entire decade trying to reinvigorate interest in the game as a result.
“This is a project made by fans, for fans. Whether you want to reminisce in some of your fondest console memories, or team up against your best friends all over again, we hope that GoldenEye: Source provides you the means to do so,” a statement from the developers read.
