A customized version of Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle, the Ferrari Luce, has sold for a staggering $40 million at a charity auction, setting a new record for the most expensive new car ever auctioned.
The specially commissioned “Tailor Made” Ferrari Luce went under the hammer during an RM Sotheby’s auction at Monterey Car Week. The auction house described the vehicle as a unique opportunity for collectors because it represents the first production chassis from Ferrari’s Luce program.
Ferrari plans to donate all proceeds from the $40 million sale to future educational initiatives, according to RM Sotheby’s. The extraordinary auction price also established a new benchmark for new vehicles sold at auction.
Bloomberg News, citing a statement from Ferrari, reported that the Luce surpassed the previous auction record for a new car, which was established in 2025. The result highlights the strong demand among high-end collectors for historically significant and highly customized Ferrari models.
The record-breaking sale comes only months after the Ferrari Luce EV received a more complicated response following its official unveiling in May. Ferrari’s Milan-listed shares dropped more than 8% after the launch as analysts and consumers reacted to the company’s first major step into the fully electric vehicle market.
Despite the initial market reaction, the $40 million auction demonstrates the considerable collector interest surrounding Ferrari’s electric era.
The Luce was developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the creative studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The partnership brought together Ferrari’s automotive heritage with a design approach influenced by one of the technology industry’s best-known designers.
As Ferrari expands beyond its traditional combustion-engine and hybrid supercars, the Luce represents a significant milestone in the Italian luxury automaker’s electrification strategy. Its record-setting charity auction could also give Ferrari’s first electric vehicle a major publicity boost as the company introduces the model to collectors and customers worldwide.
