Central Bank of Nigeria to discuss potential of digital currencies as emerging medium of exchange

The Central Bank of Nigeria is inviting stakeholders to join it to discuss the potential of digital currencies in the country, CoinTelegraph reported.

In a notice issued earlier this month, the CBN said:

“The Central Bank of Nigeria has commissioned a study on ‘Virtual Currency as an Emerging Medium of Exchange.’ To achieve the objectives of the study, there is need for stakeholders meeting to brainstorm and exchange ideas with a view to gathering relevant information on the nature, scope and dynamics of virtual currency operations in Nigeria. This would provide input into the report of the committee.”

The meeting is scheduled to be held today, 10 August 2017, at the CBN Headquarters Auditorium in the nation’s capital.

It will precede the first nationwide Blockchain and digital currency conference in Nigeria to be held on 14th and 15th of August 2017. The conference will feature experts including Dickson Nsofor, VP Business Development at Humaniq UK; Oladapo Ajayi, founder SuperDAO USA; Miklos Denker, VP Corion Foundation; and Ida Froyda, volunteer at Corion Foundation Switzerland.

In addition, the CBN’s committee on "The Study of Virtual Currency as an Emerging Medium of Exchange" will participate as panelists and observers in the conference. Musa Itopa Jimoh, Director at CBN, will be speaking at the event, Business Day reported.
