Byju's, a leading player in the edtech sector, is undergoing significant changes in its leadership and structure. Anil Goel, who has been serving as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Byju's, is set to leave the company.
This move is part of a larger restructuring process that the Bengaluru-based startup is currently implementing to streamline operations and reduce costs. Jiny Thattil will be taking over Goel's responsibilities as the new CTO, a change communicated internally at Byju's.
Anil Goel's Tenure and Departure
Anil Goel, known for his previous role at Amazon, was among the highest-paid CTOs in India. His decision to leave Byju's, as per sources, was a mutual agreement with the company. Goel's departure coincides with Byju's ongoing efforts to achieve financial stability and operational efficiency. The edtech giant has been making significant moves, including job cuts and the consolidation of some of its business units. These changes come as Byju's target is to reach a break-even point by next year. The company also witnessed the recent exit of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Jiny Thattil Steps in as New CTO
Jiny Thattil, the successor to Goel, joined Byju's in 2020 and has a solid background in engineering. Before his new role at Byju's, Thattil worked with Amazon, InMobi, and Happay, bringing a wealth of experience from these positions. He also played a key role at Epic, another startup that Byju's had acquired. Thattil's promotion to the position of CTO is seen as a strategic move in light of the current restructuring of the company.
Arjun Mohan, the CEO of Byju's India business, expressed confidence in Thattil's capabilities to lead the technological advancements at Byju's. In a statement, he emphasized Thattil's extensive experience and leadership skills as vital for the role, especially as the company focuses on rebuilding for better efficiency and sustainability. Mohan also expressed gratitude towards Anil Goel for his valuable contributions and dedication during his tenure at Byju's, highlighting Goel's role in driving technological innovation.
The ongoing changes at Byju's reflect the dynamic nature of the edtech industry, especially in the wake of global shifts in education and technology. The company's restructuring and leadership changes indicate a strategic pivot towards more sustainable growth and operational efficiency in a competitive market.
