Briferendum Series: UK’s weaker self-perception inside EU remains a major decisive factor

In campaigners, who have largely been scaremongers, showing how Britain may suffer in terms of trade, Foreign Direct Investments, Sterling have largely ignored one aspect, which has been key argument of out-campaigners that Britain is a slave to the rules of an Union, over which it has not much of an influence.

Many Britons feel themselves as inferior when it comes to influencing the policy direction of European Union.

According to Lord Ashcroft Polls, when asked, which are the countries to have most influence over European Union? (Top five)

41% of the people from European Union other than UK, included the kingdom in the list but when same question is asked in UK, just 22% included their own country.

How does that feel, being world’s one of the major power with a United Nations Security Council Seat, home to world’s top financial center and a country that once ruled almost entire globe?

Very poorly.

Then why would people want to vote to stay in a Union, whose rules they will have to adopt but will have lesser influence over its direction.

So far the stay backers haven’t addressed this issue, instead they campaign UK as an inferior one, destined to suffer without EU, rather than showing itself as one of its leader or policy driver.

And for this the pro-campaigners face a major risk of extinction if Britain chooses to leave the Union.
