Briferendum Aftermath Series: Nicola Sturgeon’s cast iron mandate

Nicola Sturgeon is probably the most dreaded person for the lawmakers at the Westminster. The Scottish first minister has already threatened the UK government with another independence referendum and her latest comments strongly suggest that she and her Scottish National Party (SNP) is determined to make Scoxit happen.

In a Times column, Sturgeon explained how things have changed since the referendum vote on Scotland’s independence in 2014. She said, “Since then, 62 percent of all those in Scotland who cast a ballot in the EU referendum voted to remain. All bar one of our 59 MPs voted against the triggering of Article 50……..And yet, two years on from being told that rejecting independence would safeguard our EU membership, we face exit from the EU and from the single market and customs union.”

She also pointed at the recent election held in Scotland, where her party defeated both the labor party candidates as well as the conservatives and secured a majority in the Scottish parliament quite easily. “The SNP was re-elected to government with more votes and seats than Labour and the Tories combined. So as well as justification for a referendum, there is also a cast-iron mandate.”

However, she pointed out that immediately after the EU referendum, she didn’t call for an independence vote, instead, she called for a compromise with the UK government but according to her, her calls remain unanswered. She insists that if her call remains unanswered, then the referendum is likely to be the only answer.
