Briferendum Aftermath Series: Mark your calendars for 17th January

Mark your calendars as British Prime Minister Theresa May for the first time will discuss her government’s Brexit plans in the parliament in her speech on 17th of January. This will be her second major speech since she became the Prime Minister, first one after the one she delivered during her party conference in October. However, that speech hardly has any details with regard to Brexit, expect that the United Kingdom would surely trigger Article 50.

On Tuesday she is expected to discuss in greater details the negotiating aims, including how her government aims to take back control of the immigration laws from the European Court of Justice (ECJ). Recently the financial markets have become worried of a ‘Hard Brexit’, which implies an exit without access to the European single market. The market would be closely following her comments since she has already refused to provide any running commentary on her government’s approach in exit preparations.

Ms. May has already secured the backing of the parliament for triggering Article 50 in March, however, the country’s Supreme court is expected to announce its decision on whether Mrs. May has the executive power to trigger the Article without parliamentary consent.

The pound, which has been hit by Brexit fears might move to a consolidation phase until Tuesday.
