There is still quite a long wait before the premiere of “Avatar 2” and it means fans will also have to be patient before seeing the first teasers. Luckily, the film's director James Cameron recently shared some of the key elements in the sequel's plot.
Cameron revealed to Empire that some of the crucial parts of “Avatar 2” will revolve around the family of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). “There’s a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, Cameron teased.
The critically-acclaimed director did not seem to divulge other plot details such as what causes a major rift in Jake and Neytiri's marriage. However, Cameron described this plot point as “very, very critical to the storyline” of “Avatar 2.”
Jake and Neytiri found love in each other while defending Pandora from the entities that wanted to plunder its natural resources. Since Cameron confirmed that their marital fight plays a key role in “Avatar 2” this could mean the characters will butt heads at some point in addressing their main adversary. Cameron also teased how this fight will be presented in the movie, “I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the eight-year-old hiding under the structure and peeking in.”
It has been rumored that “Avatar 2” will be officially titled “Avatar: The Way of Water” because it is mostly set in underwater. The reported title has not been officially verified yet by anyone attached to the making of the sequels, but it is confirmed a significant amount of scenes were shot underwater.
Sigourney Weaver, who will reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine in “Avatar 2,” told The Hollywood Reporter, “James has announced publicly that there’s a lot of underwater work, so we learned how to free dive and we did many scenes underwater, which was challenging and kind of cool. … The one scary thing is sometimes you have to be weighted down to be on the bottom.”
The sequels are now in post-production and Cameron said in the same interview that the live-action scenes alone will “cost me five months of my life.” “Avatar 2” is slated to premiere on Dec. 18, 2020.
