Amazon has signed long-term agreements to purchase electricity from four wind farms in Sweden, strengthening the technology giant’s renewable energy portfolio as it expands its data center operations in the Nordic country.
The agreements will provide Amazon with nearly 200 megawatts (MW) of additional electricity, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing statements from the company. The new supply is expected to support Amazon’s growing energy requirements as demand for cloud computing and data center infrastructure continues to increase.
Once all four wind farms become fully operational, Amazon’s contracted power supply in Sweden will exceed 1 gigawatt (GW). The milestone highlights the scale of the company’s investment in electricity capacity needed to operate its expanding digital infrastructure.
The wind farms involved in the agreements are being developed by Swedish renewable energy companies Eolus AB and OX2 AB. OX2 is owned by private equity firm EQT AB, which acquired the renewable energy developer as part of its investments in energy transition infrastructure.
Sweden has emerged as an attractive location for data centers because of its relatively cool climate and access to renewable electricity. Large technology companies have increasingly sought long-term power purchase agreements with wind and solar developers to secure electricity supplies while supporting their renewable energy and sustainability objectives.
For Amazon, the latest Swedish wind power agreements come as the company continues to increase data center capacity to meet rising demand for cloud services and other computing-intensive technologies. Data centers require substantial amounts of electricity to power servers, networking equipment and cooling systems, making access to reliable energy supplies an important consideration for expansion.
The nearly 200 MW of additional wind power will further strengthen Amazon’s energy footprint in Sweden while providing long-term demand for renewable electricity generated by Eolus and OX2 projects.
With more than 1 GW of power supply expected once the projects are operational, Amazon is positioning Sweden as an increasingly important part of its European data center and renewable energy strategy.
