At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking several vehicles before bursting into flames.
Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the airport’s diagonal runway at around 2 p.m. local time and came to a stop near the northwest end of Miami International Airport, according to an airport spokesperson.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the crash and found the aircraft on fire after it had collided with multiple vehicles. Miami-Dade County officials confirmed five fatalities.
Five other people were injured. Three were listed in critical condition and transported to a trauma center, while two were taken to a local hospital. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims or clarified whether they were aboard the Amazon cargo aircraft or inside vehicles hit during the crash.
The accident caused major disruptions at Miami International Airport. All runways and taxiways were initially closed, and a ground stop remained in effect as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Around 250 flights were delayed following the incident, while other flights were canceled. Two of the airport’s four runways had reopened by Sunday evening, although officials warned that flight disruptions could continue.
Footage from the area showed thick smoke rising from what appeared to be a roadway outside the airport. Flight 7598 had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before arriving in Miami.
The cause of the runway overrun remains unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to investigate the Amazon Prime Air plane crash and determine what caused the aircraft to leave the runway.
The incident comes more than seven years after another Amazon-branded cargo aircraft was involved in a fatal accident. In February 2019, an Atlas Air-operated Boeing 767 flying from Miami crashed near Houston, killing all three people aboard. That crash involved a different aircraft and operator.
