TikTok is the latest mainstream tech company to announce a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that will be auctioned throughout October. The collection of digital assets, called TikTok Top Moments, will feature collaborations between popular artists and top creators on the social media platform.
The NFT collection has yet to be revealed, but the social media company describes TikTok Top Moments as six videos from the platform deemed to be “culturally significant.” The assets will be hosted on a dedicated website through the company’s partnership with Immutable X, which offers Layer 2 scaling solution for NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. Immutable X also advertises “zero gas fees for peer to peer trading” and that “any NFT that is created or traded on Immutable X is 100% carbon neutral.”
TikTok Top Moments will launch with six NFTs that will go on sale through weekly drops in October. The collaboration between musician Lil Nas X and artist Rudy Willingham will be up first on Oct. 6. In a press release, TikTok offered a good explanation on the pairing, taking note of Willingham’s viral stop motion video inspired by Lil Nas X’s hit song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” The post has amassed more than 3.4 million since it was published in June as Willingham’s tribute to the singer and to commemorate Pride Month.
Grimes, who TikTok referred to as an NFT pioneer, has two separate collaborations with Brittany Broski, also known as “Kombucha Girl,” and Bella Poarch, who is one of the platform’s biggest creators, currently having 83 million followers. Another popular personality within the NFT world, COIN ARTIST, has worked with TikTok star Curtis Roach. Robot rapper FNMeka has partnered with NFT sneakers creator RTFKT. Completing the digital collection is the work from Gary Vaynerchuk, Jess Marciante (@jesssthemess), and digital artist x0r, whose total artwork is currently valued at 495.405 ETH (around $1.5 million).
TikTok Top Moments will feature one-of-one and limited edition NFTs. The one-of-one NFTs will be auctioned and will be available on Ethereum, while the limited editions will be sold weekly in October. “The limited edition NFTs will be sold at accessible price points to ensure each creator’s audience can own a piece of their history,” TikTok said in the collection’s drop site.
