Thailand’s railway and postal services to use IoT and blockchain technology – Report

Two of Thailand’s state-owned agencies are going to apply cutting edge technologies to improve their logistics services.

Bangkok Post reports that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Thailand Post are going to implement the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technology.

In a statement, Sirima Hiruncharoenvate, the SRT's chief information officer, said that the approval from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission on the 800-900 megahertz spectrum for a wireless railway communications system has enabled the SRT to continue its work on the IoT plan.

IoT would enable railway stations to know the exact arrival time of trains and people in stations can be informed accordingly. In addition, by connecting with the Railway Signalling system, the IoT device would allow authorities to stop the train in time to prevent accidents and save lives.

“It will also improve the logistics service of goods delivery," Hiruncharoenvate said.

Thailand Post director Thitipong Nandhabiwat recently said the company is considering to implement blockchain technology by the end of this year or early next year. The technology would be used for high-value parcels such as luxury items.

"Blockchain is secure and trusted as only authorised persons are allowed to open parcels," Nandhabiwat said (as quoted by Bangkok Post).
