Russia has warned NATO that it could use nuclear weapons if alliance members attempt to isolate Kaliningrad, escalating tensions between Moscow and the West amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a diplomatic note sent to NATO, Russia accused the alliance of pursuing a “dangerous and reckless course” that could trigger direct military confrontation. Moscow said any attempt by NATO countries to cut off Kaliningrad from the rest of Russia could prompt it to deploy its full range of military capabilities, including nuclear weapons.
The Russian exclave, located between NATO members Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, is heavily militarized and strategically important to Moscow. Russia also warned that a conflict could involve strikes against decision-making centers in NATO countries from the outset.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said recent statements by officials from NATO countries demonstrated growing hostility toward Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Russia’s warnings as diplomatic reminders aimed at European “hotheads.”
NATO rejected Moscow’s accusations and called on Russia to stop its nuclear rhetoric. Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed that NATO is a defensive alliance and said its military exercises and activities do not threaten Russian territory. He also dismissed suggestions that nuclear weapons were likely to be used against the Baltic states, arguing that Moscow understands it cannot defeat NATO militarily.
The confrontation comes as Russia-Europe relations deteriorate further. European governments have accused Moscow of conducting a “hybrid war” involving sabotage and arson, allegations Russia denies.
Nikolai Sokov, a Vienna-based nuclear analyst and former Russian diplomat, warned that both sides face an increasing risk of miscalculation. He said Moscow may view actions such as a Baltic Sea blockade as an act of war even if European governments consider them below that threshold.
A NATO diplomat characterized Russia’s message as an attempt to intimidate European countries, while a senior European defense official said the warning represented an unusually serious escalation in Russian rhetoric toward NATO.
