Germany gets blockchain advocacy group ‘Blockchain Bundesverband’

A new blockchain advocacy group has been formed in Germany which aims to bring private and public institutions together to connect with the innovative technology.

Called “Blockchain Bundesverband”, the group was founded in the German parliament building, the Bundestag, in Berlin Thursday, CoinTelegraph reported. Notably, the group has a political advisory panel comprising of representatives from the country's major political parties including Thomas Jarzombek of the CDU and Jens Zimmermann of the SPD. In addition, representatives from Die Linke, Die Grünen, and FDP have also joined the initiative, according to CoinDesk.

Jolocom, Slock.it, IOTA, and other German-based startups are also supporting the effort. In its official announcement, Blockchain Bundesverband said that it:

“is convinced that blockchain and similar, cryptographic-based decentralized technologies are fundamental infrastructural innovations. For the significance of Germany in a digitally networked world, this realization is elementary. The potential of blockchain technology can only develop when citizens, as well as private and public institutions, connect with the technology and the technology itself is recognized by law and society.” (loosely translated)

The group has also outlined its key objectives which include (as translated by ETH News)

1. Establishing regulation that bolsters innovation in the fields of civil law and taxation in order to enable Germany to be an economic leader within the blockchain ecosystem.

2. The association will also encourage use of blockchain technology within the public sector:

  • By 2020, the association aims to have launched at least one blockchain-based public register.
  • Obtain state-recognition of trust services, time services, identity services, and electronic signatures as currently defined in eIDAS Regulation.
  • Provide legally suggested interfaces for electronic data transmission and provision.

3. Increase the promotion of blockchain technology in science education.

4. Establish a Blockchain Inquiry Commission to examine how the democratic legal state can be transformed by blockchain technology and assist the country with integrating into the digital age.
