Saxo Bank adds bitcoin exchange traded notes to portfolio

In response to the growing popularity of digital currency bitcoin, Danish investment bank Saxo Bank has added two new bitcoin Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs) to its offering, according to Finance Feeds.

With this, Saxo clients would get exposure to bitcoin. The ETNs, designed to track the movement of bitcoin against the US dollar, are issued by XBT Provider and traded on Nasdaq OMX. These include:

  • ‘Bitcoin Tracker One’ is traded in Swedish krona (SEK)
  • ‘Bitcoin Tracker EURO’ is traded in Euro (EUR)

Finance Feeds said that if the bank’s partners are subscribed to these exchanges, the bitcoin trackers will be automatically enabled on their platform.

"We have been following the development in cryptocurrencies closely and our Saxo Strategy Team has monitored and commented on the rapid development," said Claus Nielsen, head of markets at Saxo Bank, as quoted by TheStreet. "We have now added two new listed instruments on the Saxo Bank platform that tracks the movement of Bitcoin and we will look into the client appetite as we are developing the future foundation for access to cryptocurrencies in Saxo Bank."

XBT Provider's prospectus is approved by the Swedish FSA (Finansinspektionen). Earlier in June, Hargreaves Lansdown, a UK-based investment platform for private investors, also added bitcoin exposure via ETNs.
